10 Musicals to Stream Right Now

With this week’s bomb drop that Broadway is remaining closed until at least May 30, 2020, a lot of artists and art lovers are still floundering for work and wondering, as our favorite king would sing, “what comes next?” Although it won’t solve all of our problems by any means, there are many great musicals that can be streamed right now from our own comfortable and COVID-safe living rooms.

The musicals that I’m including in this list are definitely not all of the musicals out there available to stream (and are a mix of stage and film), but simply my favorites that I would love to share with you!

  1. Hamilton (Disney+) - I think we all know that Hamilton is ready to stream on Disney+, but I simply had to include it on my list. I mean, who doesn’t love to watch Daveed Diggs prance around the stage in a purple suit?

  2. Les Miserables (Netflix) - Russell Crowe is not my favorite, I won’t lie, but Hugh Jackman? This was the first time I learned that he was a musical theatre performer and not just Wolverine, I know...shame.

  3. Footloose (Hulu) - Okay, the movie is not TECHNICALLY a musical in the sense that the stage show is, but it’s FOOTLOOSE, all can be forgiven. Both versions are on Hulu, but we just pretend that the 2011 one wasn’t made. Right? Right.

  4. Singin’ in the Rain (Amazon Prime) - I didn’t see this movie (and I’ve never seen it on stage) until I was 20. How I waited until I was 20 I have no idea, please don’t wait as long as me. Please do yourself a favor and watch Princess Leia’s mom dance and sing her heart out.

  5. The Greatest Showman (Disney+) - You remember how we talked about Hugh Jackman a few sentences ago? Yeah, The Greatest Showman is seriously one of my most favorite musicals. Are they making it into a stage show at some point? I have no idea, but I hope so!

  6. Oklahoma (Amazon Prime) - I’ve never seen the film but I actually really enjoy the stage show. I’m not really one for the classics, but this is one classic that I could watch multiple times. Also, have we talked about Hugh Jackman yet? He was in Oklahoma at the National Theatre in London in the 90s! You can see his performance on BroadwayHD!

  7. Newsies: The Broadway Musical OR Newsies (Disney+) - I’m a fan of the film and the pro-shot and I love them both for different reasons, whichever you choose, you really can’t go wrong with Newsies.

  8. Annie (Amazon Prime OR Disney+) - Again, I like both for different reasons. The 80s Annie will always hold a special place in my heart because “Tomorrow” was the first song that I ever performed in front of an audience at age 6. The Disney Annie is wonderful because I want to adopt Victor Garber as my grandpa, he is such a wonderful human being.

  9. Sister Act (Disney+) - Singing Nuns. Need I say more?

  10. Mary Poppins (Disney+) - In a time of crazy uncertainty and constant anxiety, a spoonful of sugar, Julie Andrews, and Dick Van Dyke may be all we need to keep it together.

Bonus: It’s not a pro-shot or a film musical, but watch Glee (Netflix). It was overrated for a while (and still is a little bit), but there are so many good messages in it.
